Legally, do lawyers have to be paid upfront before filing a bankruptcy case? A close relative is filing for bankruptcy and has asked me to wire him $3500 to pay his lawyer. I'd rather write a check or wire it through my bank (which usually takes 2-3 business days) and do not want to pay HUGE western union fees to wire him the money. According to the lawyer, he can not legally file the bankruptcy case until the money is in the lawyer's escrow account. The bankruptcy case must be filed no later than tomorrow. Case is being filed in Hawaii, if it matters. Smells like a scam, but I guess it's possible. I'd like to know for sure before I pay a dime.
