How can one do a character check of lawyers in the US?

Is there is a way, please suggest specific websites and or names of organizations that I can call. Links will also be greatly appreciated. Really, how else do people decide regarding the trustworthy of lawyers?

There is a public website for this purpose, which is privately maintained. http://www.avvo.com Most people choose their attorneys by first asking their friends and co-workers. Then, they make an appointment and speak to the attorney. If they don't like the attorney, they don't hire the attorney.
