How can I get my products promoted by certain magazines in their colums?

HI, I am just starting out on a small venture of hand made products and I wanted to get my products promoted in magazines. I am interested in small articles that talk about new finds etc. How do we get the attention of those magazines? Do I send them my samples and pray for the best or is there a more sure fire way? I am talking about magazines like Oprah, Living, etcor any popular lifestayle magazines. I am guessing that once recommended, these products get great sales.

1. I've found that magazines tend to save those spots for advertisers in their magazines. If you have a new product, and talk to their sales department about running ads, pretty soon something comes up in the conversation about also featuring your new business in some kind of an article. This might not make sense until you figure that magazines are primarily in the business of advertising, and that's where they make most of their money. There's constant wheeling and dealing going on in the background at all magazines, making deals with potential advertisers. If you'd like your products to be featured, spend some money on advertising and let them know you're interested, I bet you can make it happen.
