Apple enthusiasts have been waiting through multiple iPhone generations for these enhancements, and now all three could finally arrive in the same device. Here’s what’s coming and why these changes matter.

1: Variable Aperture Camera

More than two years ago, a well-known tech publication reported that Apple was developing a "variable aperture" camera system for the iPhone. At the time, the report claimed the iPhone 17 was the target model for this new feature. However, a prominent Apple supply chain analyst disagreed, saying the feature was instead planned for the iPhone 18 line. Now, with iPhone 18 Pro almost here, the latest reporting indicates variable aperture is indeed coming to the Main camera.

What exactly is a variable aperture? In simple terms, it means the camera lens can adjust its aperture opening to control the amount of light that reaches the sensor. Most smartphone cameras have a fixed aperture, which forces the camera to rely on software, exposure time, and ISO to handle different lighting conditions. A variable aperture gives the lens mechanical flexibility, allowing it to open wider in low light or stop down in bright conditions.

The potential benefits are considerable. A wider aperture lets in more light, which is especially useful for night photography, indoor shots, and video. A narrower aperture can improve sharpness across a scene, reduce overexposure in bright sunlight, and create a broader depth of field for landscape photography. It also opens the door to more advanced controls for pro users, who could manually select the aperture they want for a particular shot.

Some Android smartphone makers have experimented with variable aperture technology in the past, but the results have been mixed. Apple tends to wait until the technology can be implemented in a way that matches its philosophy of simple, reliable, and high-quality photography. If Apple implements variable aperture well, it could be a game-changer for iPhone photography, giving users more creative control without requiring them to switch to a dedicated camera.

The big question is how Apple will handle the feature. Will the aperture be fully automatic, or will there be a Pro mode that lets users choose? Given that Apple has been gradually adding more pro-level features to the iPhone Pro lineup, it seems likely that the variable aperture will be paired with some level of manual control. Fortunately, we are only weeks away from the unveiling and full feature reveal.

2: Smaller Dynamic Island

It has been almost 10 years since the iPhone X introduced the notch, the first cutout in an iPhone display. At the time, the notch was a bold design choice, and it quickly became one of the most recognizable features of the modern iPhone. But after several generations, the notch began to feel dated, especially as competitors found ways to minimize bezels and cutouts.

It wasn’t until 2022’s iPhone 14 Pro that the current Dynamic Island design arrived, which shrank the cutout and transformed it into a software-driven, interactive area. The Dynamic Island uses a pill-shaped cutout and a clever black backdrop to display alerts, live activities, controls, and more. It was an instant hit, even if the hardware cutout itself wasn’t dramatically smaller than the notch it replaced.

Now, four years later, a smaller Dynamic Island is finally coming with iPhone 18 Pro. Rumors indicate Apple’s new Dynamic Island cutout will be about 35% smaller than the previous design. That is a significant reduction, and it should make the cutout less visually intrusive while still housing the TrueDepth camera system and Face ID sensors.

This reduction in size is even hinted at by Siri’s new look in iOS 27. Apple’s new Siri interface has been designed around a more subtle glow effect, and some observers have noted that the design seems to accommodate a more compact cutout. That suggests Apple has been planning this hardware change in tandem with its software design for some time.

A smaller Dynamic Island has several benefits. It gives users more usable screen space for content like videos, games, and reading material. The cutout will occupy less of the display, making the screen feel more immersive. It could also make the Dynamic Island feel more refined, as the interaction between the hardware and software becomes even tighter.

The challenge for Apple is to shrink the cutout without compromising Face ID performance or front-facing camera quality. That likely involves moving some components under the display or making the sensor array more compact. If Apple manages to do that, the smaller Dynamic Island will be a subtle but welcome improvement.

3: Apple-Designed C2 Modem

Apple’s in-house modem efforts have been an open secret for years. The company has long wanted to reduce its dependence on Qualcomm, which supplies the cellular modems for many iPhones. Apple has been designing its own chips for years, from the A-series processors in iPhones to the M-series chips in Macs, so a modem was the missing puzzle piece.

The breakthrough happened last year, when the first Apple-designed modem launched in an iPhone: the C1. This marked a major milestone in Apple’s transition away from third-party modem components. The C1 was included in the iPhone 17 lineup and delivered solid performance, though it did not offer every feature found in Qualcomm’s latest modems.

Now, rumors indicate Apple plans to switch away from Qualcomm modems in iPhone 18 Pro in favor of its own next-generation C2 chip. The C2 will likely bring speed gains over the C1X and C1, which are already part of Apple’s modem lineup. The "X" version, presumably a mid-generation improvement, has been seen in some devices, but the C2 is expected to be the first truly flagship Apple modem.

There are several reasons why Apple is so determined to replace Qualcomm. First, designing its own modem allows Apple to integrate the hardware more deeply with its other chips, including the A-series processor and the Neural Engine. That can lead to improved power efficiency, better thermal management, and more consistent performance.

Second, Apple has always emphasized privacy. An Apple-designed modem could bring new privacy benefits, including better on-device processing of network-related data and more transparent security controls. Third, removing Qualcomm from the equation gives Apple more control over the iPhone’s supply chain and reduces licensing costs.

The C2 modem is expected to deliver faster download and upload speeds, improved call quality, and better support for global 5G networks. It may also enable new features that require close cooperation between the modem and the rest of the chipset, such as advanced beamforming or intelligent network switching. These benefits could be especially noticeable in dense urban areas or when traveling.

Of course, the transition from Qualcomm to Apple modems will not happen overnight. Apple will likely continue to use Qualcomm chips in some models for a while, but the iPhone 18 Pro appears to be the device where Apple’s modem ambitions finally take center stage.
