Valar Atomics has confirmed that it raised $1 billion in equity in a round led by Sequoia partner Shaun Maguire, who is joining the company's board of directors. The nuclear startup also secured a $200 million line of credit from Erebor and other banks, according to an announcement made Monday by founder and CEO Isaiah Taylor. The funding had been widely expected, and it marks one of the largest private investments ever made in a nuclear technology company.

The new round gives Valar Atomics substantial financial firepower as it tries to industrialize the production of small modular nuclear reactors. While the company did not disclose its valuation, reports have pegged the figure at around $6 billion. That would place Valar among the most valuable private companies in the nuclear energy sector, a field that was once seen as too capital-intensive and slow-moving for the startup world but has recently attracted billions of dollars from investors looking to solve the growing power demands of artificial intelligence data centers.

Sequoia's involvement is particularly notable. Shaun Maguire, a partner at the venture capital firm, has been an active investor in technology companies, and his decision to take a board seat at Valar signals that the firm views nuclear power as a mainstream infrastructure bet rather than a niche science project. Sequoia has backed some of the biggest names in technology, and its endorsement could make it easier for Valar to attract additional partners, customers, and talent as it moves from pilot projects to commercial deployment.

Building small modular reactors

Valar is developing small modular reactors, or SMRs, which are essentially miniaturized power plants that can be built in a factory and shipped to a site. The concept is not new, but Valar argues that its approach differs from previous attempts because it treats reactor design like a software or hardware development cycle: every unit generates data that can be used to improve the next one. This data-driven approach, the company says, will allow it to shrink the time between design changes and production milestones.

The company recently demonstrated its Ward 250 reactor by successfully powering an Nvidia Blackwell system in June. It also announced a deal with Nvidia to develop a waterless 30MW AI factory. The partnership is part of a broader trend in which AI infrastructure companies are looking for dedicated, clean, and reliable power sources.
