Tecno’s EllaClaw AI agent wants to clean up your phone and run your errands

Most AI assistants are happy to chat with you, but they rarely roll up their sleeves and get things done. Tecno wants to change that with EllaClaw, its beta-stage mobile AI agent that aims to handle real tasks on your phone instead of just answering questions. The company showed off the next version of EllaClaw, and it now reaches deeper into your device and your favorite apps.

Tired of a slow, hot, battery-drained phone? EllaClaw has the solution.

EllaClaw packs over 40 Smart Skills that let it act like a caretaker for your device. You can ask it to free up RAM and CPU to fix lag, find the apps draining your battery, or cool down your phone when it gets too hot during heavy use. There’s also a Smart Data Guardian that keeps an eye on your mobile data, which is a thoughtful touch for anyone tired of running out before the month ends. Before it makes any big changes, EllaClaw checks in with you first, so nothing happens behind your back.

It can also learn your habits over time and use that information to help with daily routines. You can ask it to give you morning briefings that pull in your calendar, weather, and news, or act as a trip assistant that books rides and sets your departure alarms.

What more can it do?

EllaClaw can also work across different apps, including shopping, food delivery, transportation, and smart home services. Instead of working like a mysterious black box, it navigates your apps in a visible, human-like way, so you can watch each step. For now, EllaClaw is still an exploratory concept in closed beta. As Jack Guo, General Manager of Tecno, put it, the goal is to help “simplify everyday tasks, reduce friction and make advanced experiences more accessible, while ensuring transparency and user control remain central.”

Tecno says more details will come as development moves forward. It’s one of the few smartphone AI agents that actually seems to help users instead of aggravating them. I would love to see it come out of beta so I can test its claims and see how it performs in the real world.

Background: The evolution of mobile AI agents

The concept of an AI agent that can operate across apps has been a long-standing goal in the tech industry. Early attempts, such as Google Assistant’s routines or Samsung Bixby’s quick commands, were limited to simple scripted actions. The rise of large language models (LLMs) has opened the door for more flexible and autonomous agents. Tecno, a brand known for offering feature-rich phones at affordable prices in emerging markets, sees this as a way to differentiate itself. While its hardware often impresses on paper, software has been an area where it can improve. EllaClaw represents a bold step toward making everyday phone management effortless.

In many ways, Tecno is following a trend set by companies like Apple with its upcoming AI features, but with a focus on practical, device-level tasks. Apple Intelligence, expected later this year, will also offer cross-app actions. However, Tecno’s approach is unique because it emphasizes transparency: the agent shows each step as it navigates your screen. This builds trust, especially for users who worry about losing control to automation. Additionally, by focusing on performance optimization (RAM, CPU, battery), EllaClaw addresses common pain points that plague Android smartphones, especially in markets where users often run heavy apps or have older devices.

How EllaClaw compares to other AI assistants

Most AI assistants today are reactive: you ask a question, and they answer. EllaClaw is proactive. It monitors your phone’s state and suggests actions. For example, if your phone gets hot while gaming, it can detect that and offer to close background processes. This is reminiscent of game booster modes found in many phones, but EllaClaw generalizes that capability to all apps. Another unique aspect is its ability to work with third-party apps in a visible way. Instead of using hidden APIs, it relies on screen navigation, similar to how Android’s accessibility services work. This makes it potentially compatible with more apps, but also slower than native integrations. However, for users who value control over speed, this trade-off is acceptable.

The Smart Data Guardian feature is particularly interesting for users in emerging markets where mobile data is expensive. By tracking usage in real time and suggesting Wi-Fi when possible, EllaClaw can help save money. It also includes a habit-learning component that personalizes suggestions over time. For instance, if you often order food at lunchtime, it might prompt you to launch a food delivery app earlier, or even open it with your previous order ready. This level of convenience could increase user engagement and make the phone feel more intuitive.

Technical challenges and future potential

Building an AI agent that reliably performs actions across different apps is notoriously difficult. App UIs change frequently, and the agent must adapt. Tecno likely uses a combination of computer vision and on-device AI to parse screens and simulate taps. This requires constant updates and a robust fallback mechanism. The closed beta phase is essential to iron out these issues. If successful, EllaClaw could be offered as a core feature in Tecno’s upcoming phones, or even as a downloadable app for existing models. It could also serve as a platform for third-party developers to create “skills” that extend its capabilities, turning it into a low-code automation tool like IFTTT or Tasker but with a natural language interface.

Privacy is another major concern. Because EllaClaw sees everything on your screen, users must trust that this data stays local. Tecno emphasizes that the agent learns on-device and doesn’t send personal data to the cloud. This is similar to Apple’s stance on on-device AI. If Tecno can maintain this promise, it will gain an edge over cloud-based assistants that raise privacy flags. The fact that EllaClaw asks for confirmation before making changes also reinforces user control.

In the long run, EllaClaw could evolve into a true digital butler. Imagine telling it, “Plan my evening: book a restaurant, set navigation, and turn down the smart thermostat at 7 PM.” It would handle each step across different apps, visible on screen. That vision is not far off, and Tecno’s early moves could shape how other Android manufacturers approach AI agents. For now, we await the end of the closed beta to see if EllaClaw delivers on its promise.
