Aave, one of the largest decentralized lending protocols in crypto, has started a governance process that could result in its exit from six blockchains that generate negligible revenue. The proposal targets deployments on Sonic, Scroll, zkSync, Metis, Soneium, and Aptos, a collection of networks that together hold roughly $98 million in deposits.

That figure represents less than 1% of Aave's total assets, which stand at around $14 billion. According to the governance post, each of the six chains generates under $5,000 in quarterly revenue, an amount far below the operational and security costs of maintaining the markets.

What the proposal covers

The offboarding plan is not limited to closing deployments. It also calls for retiring 50 asset markets on other chains where activity has dried up or where the risk profile has become too demanding for the revenue generated.

Assets in those markets have seen significant declines in deposits, with some falling more than 90%, according to data cited by the proposal. The cleanup is intended to sharpen Aave's focus on its highest-utility markets and free up resources currently spent on underperforming integrations.

Aave's multi-chain experiment comes under pressure

During the last bull market, Aave expanded aggressively across multiple blockchains. The strategy was to be the default lending layer wherever DeFi users gathered. That meant deploying to new networks early, even when usage was thin, in the hope that liquidity would follow.

For a time, the approach worked. Aave became the leading lending protocol on Ethereum and a major presence on chains like Arbitrum, Optimism, Polygon, and Base. Each integration brought additional TVL and fee revenue, and the governance framework allowed Aave token holders to vote on which assets and networks to support.

But the calculus has changed. As competition among DeFi protocols has intensified and as newer chains have struggled to sustain user activity, the costs of maintaining many integrations have come to outweigh the benefits. The six chains targeted in this proposal are a snapshot of that broader trend: their deposits are small, their revenue is minimal, and their contribution to Aave's global network is marginal.

Sonic, Scroll, zkSync, Metis, Soneium, and Aptos in focus

Each of the six named chains has a different history with Aave.

Sonic is an Ethereum Layer-2 network designed for high-throughput applications. It managed to attract some early attention and a modest amount of assets, but trading volumes and lending demand have remained low.

Scroll is another Ethereum rollup that has secured a place in the ecosystem but has not yet generated enough DeFi activity to make Aave's presence there profitable.

zkSync Era has been a prominent name in the zk-rollup category. Aave's deployment on zkSync was seen as a way to bring established lending infrastructure to the emerging stack. However, the protocol has struggled to gain traction relative to optimistic rollups like Arbitrum and Optimism.

Metis is a Layer-2 network with a smaller footprint. Its ecosystem has remained niche, and the proposal says that deposits have fallen sharply from peak levels.

Soneium is a blockchain project developed under Sony's umbrella, aimed at connecting entertainment and Web3. The integration attracted press attention, but the actual usage has never justified the ongoing maintenance burden.

Aptos is a Layer-1 blockchain built on the Move programming language. Aave's deployment on Aptos was intended to capture some of the platform's early momentum, but user activity has not lived up to expectations, and the market remains largely dormant.

The common thread across all six deployments is a lack of sustained demand. Lending volumes are thin, collateral types are limited, and the cost of monitoring risk, updating price feeds, and maintaining smart contracts is not being recovered by fee income.

How the process would work

The proposal outlines a gradual offboarding process rather than an abrupt shutdown. In the first stage, Aave would freeze the affected markets. That means users cannot open new positions or add new collateral, but they can still repay debt and withdraw assets.

At the same time, the protocol would raise borrowing costs on these chains to what the proposal calls "prohibitively expensive" levels. This is meant to encourage users to close positions voluntarily, reducing the need for any forced liquidations or emergency measures.

Once a market has been fully wound down, the deployment could be removed entirely. The proposal says this approach minimizes disruption while allowing Aave to clean up its balance sheet and reduce exposure to untested or low-activity networks.

Why revenue matters

For years, DeFi protocols measured success primarily by total value locked. The assumption was that TVL would eventually translate into fees and protocol revenue. But as the market matured, investors and governance participants have started paying closer attention to actual income.

Aave has become one of the few DeFi protocols with meaningful revenue generation. Its core markets on Ethereum and major Layer-2 networks produce consistent fees from borrowing and flash loans. But the long tail of small deployments is not contributing to that success.

The governance proposal notes that the six chains combined account for less than 1% of Aave's assets. With around $14 billion in total value locked, the targeted chains represent about $98 million. Even if Aave were to earn a typical lending spread on that amount, the absolute revenue would be minuscule.

Under $5,000 in quarterly revenue per chain is not enough to pay for the audits, oracle infrastructure, and developer time required to keep a deployment healthy. By cutting those costs, Aave can improve its net revenue position and deliver a more focused value proposition to users.

Risk reduction is also a motivation

Cost cutting is not the only factor. Maintaining markets on many chains creates a broader risk surface. Every new deployment means additional external dependencies, oracle integrations, and smart contract configurations that need to be monitored.

Some of the affected markets hold assets that are little traded, making price feeds less reliable. When an asset has low liquidity, a single large transaction can move its price, potentially triggering spurious liquidations. In isolated markets, those risks are contained, but they still require constant supervision by Aave's risk managers.

In addition, some of these chains have experienced technical issues or have seen their own governance direction shift over time. Aave's decentralized governance cannot control what happens on a chain that it has not endorsed through formal risk parameters. The more chains Aave is present on, the more vulnerable it is to bugs, bridge failures, or governance attacks that could threaten user funds.

By reducing the number of active deployments, Aave can allocate more attention to its core markets and improve its overall security posture. The proposal explicitly frames the move as a risk-reduction measure, not just a cost-saving exercise.

Asset market retirement beyond the six chains

The proposal also targets 50 asset markets on chains that Aave is not necessarily exiting. This is a broader cleanup of the long tail of collateral types that have accumulated over time.

Many of these markets were launched with significant optimism, backed by community votes and token incentives. Over time, some assets lost their peg, others saw liquidity dry up, and a few could be considered dead tokens that remain listed only because no one took the initiative to remove them.

Retiring these markets is a way to simplify Aave's risk parameters and ensure that every listed asset meets a minimum standard of usefulness and liquidity. It also helps protect users from interacting with markets that could become illiquid during a downturn.

A shift in DeFi strategy

The proposal is one of the clearest examples of a major DeFi protocol moving from a "deploy everywhere" strategy to a "focus on what matters" strategy. This shift has been visible across the industry.

Many of the high-speed, multi-chain integrations that were announced during the 2021-2022 build cycle have not delivered sustainable user growth. Instead, economic activity has consolidated on a handful of established networks, particularly Ethereum, Arbitrum, Optimism, and Base. Newer chains may still attract grant-funded programs and temporary liquidity, but the effect often fades once incentives end.

The result is a more pragmatic approach to protocol expansion. Governance participants are more willing to vote against new deployments if they cannot demonstrate a credible path to revenue or at least a clear strategic benefit.

What users should do

Users with positions on the affected chains should review the proposal and prepare for the wind-down. Current lending and borrowing activity will continue during the initial freeze phase, but no new positions will be allowed.

The higher borrowing rates are designed to make it increasingly expensive to keep positions open. Users who want to avoid paying those rates should repay debt and withdraw collateral before the process reaches its final stage.

Aave's governance process will determine the exact timeline. If the proposal receives enough votes in favor, the on-chain execution will follow the steps described in the forum post, with markets being frozen and rates adjusted over a period that allows users to unwind their positions in an orderly way.

What could come next

For Aave, the proposal is a step toward a leaner, more profitable protocol. It follows a broader pattern of governance actions aimed at improving capital efficiency and reducing the burden of maintaining unused infrastructure.

Other protocol teams are likely to watch the outcome closely. If Aave can successfully navigate the offboarding process without major user disruption, it may serve as a model for how DeFi platforms can discipline their own expansion and focus resources where they have the greatest impact.

The pending vote will be a test of Aave's governance maturity. In the past, token holders have been reluctant to remove markets for fear of looking like they are turning away from innovation. But as the gap between core revenues and marginal markets continues to widen, the case for pruning has become harder to ignore.

The six chains in question may have once represented a bet on the future of DeFi. Today, they have become a reminder that not every network will succeed, and that even the largest protocols need to make hard choices about where to spend their energy.
